Gmail is the most popular and preferred email platform used around the world. If you are a person who sends confidential content or sensitive messages out from your email address, you can use Gmail’s Confidential Mode feature. This feature protects your content from being forwarded, downloaded, printed, or copy/pasted somewhere else by the receiver. The email you send can also be protected by a password which will be sent only to the receiver as an SMS or email. In this Confidential Mode, you can also set the expiry date of the email you send. The expiration time ranges from 1 day to 5 years. After the expiry time set by you, the recipient will not be able to see the email you sent.

How to send an Email with the expiry date and also password on Gmail?

  1. Open Gmail and hit Compose.
  2. Enter the recipient details and enter the content you want to send.
  3. At the bottom of the new message that you are composing, you will find the Confidential Mode icon which is designed with a lock and a clock merged together, click on it. This option is found near the Attach Files and Insert Photo option.
  4. Tap on Confidential Mode and its settings will pop-up.
  5. Set expiration time from the options given. The options will be 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 5 years. Choose one of them.
  6. Below that you will be given an option to make your email password protected.
  7. If you select “No SMS passcode,” any recipient using the Gmail app will be able to open it without a password while others will receive a password through their email.
  8. If you select “SMS passcode,” the recipient will receive an SMS with the password. The phone number will be asked after you hit send.
  9. Hit send, it will ask for the phone number if you had chosen the “SMS passcode” option. Enter it carefully because the key to your email goes to that number.

This can be done both on computers and inside smartphone’s Gmail app.

How to open a Confidential email in Gmail.

  1. Open the email and tap on “View the email”
  2. If the sender had selected “SMS Passcode” it will ask you for permission to send the passcode to your phone else you will receive it as an email.
  3. Enter the passcode and you will be able to access the mail

The mail cannot be used anywhere and no files can be downloaded, hence it is exclusive to you. However, the sender can remove access to his email anytime.
